My Reading Habits

I saw this questionnaire about reading habits on a few of my favorite book blogs : Suey's It's All About Books and Jenni Elyse's blog. I don't do them very often but while I sit here waiting for pictures to download on my computer, I'll give it a shot.

1. Do you have a certain place at home for reading?

Most of my reading is done at night when the kids are already in bed, so I usually read on my bed. However, I have several cozy places that work for reading. There's a small couch in my loft where I read during the day. There's another small couch in the boys' bedroom where I sit when I read aloud to the kids (that doesn't happen often enough these days).

2. Do you use a bookmark or a random piece of paper?

I love real bookmarks but I use whatever I can find to mark my place. I've been known to use playing cards, index cards, wrappers and even money. If my kids see me using a dollar bill for a bookmark they have been known to quickly make me a bookmark that just happens to cost exactly a dollar. Enterprising youngsters. Also, since she was very small, Molly loves to pull the bookmarks out of my books.

3. Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter or a certain amount of pages?

I certainly prefer to stop reading at a chapter break but I can put the book down anywhere in an emergency. Seriously, with kids you just have to go.

4. Do you eat or drink while reading?

Not really.

5. Do you watch TV or listen to music while reading?

My husband watches TV next to me while I read and occasionally I have been known to get sucked into his show.

6. Do you read one book at a time or several at once?

I used to only read one book at at time, but during the last few years I am usually reading a paper book and an ebook at the same time.

7. Do you prefer to read at home or anywhere?

I usually read at home but I can read in the car (as a passenger) on road trips and while I wait in doctors' offices, at the mechanic's or in the car picking up kids from school. I always take my book with me or my phone, which I use to read ebooks.

8. Do you read out loud or silently?

I read silently. But I do love to read books out loud to the kids. Thomas and I read Old Yeller recently and last Christmas vacation, I read Unbroken out loud to Rand.

9. Do you read ahead or skip pages?
Never. I do skim if the book is not keeping my interest but I want to find out how it ends.

10. Do you break the spine or keep it like new?

I caress the spines with loving care.

11. Do you write in your books?

I write notes and mark passages in my scriptures. Otherwise, I only write my name and the date that I read the book inside the front cover.

There you go! A little about my reading habits. What are yours?

  1. Ha! I love that your kids make bookmarks so they can take your dollar bills. That's so funny!
